Share Six Blog Circle – June 2018 | Abstract

{Abstract}

Abstract art uses a visual language of shape, form, color and line to create a composition which may exist with a degree of independence from visual references in the world.

Abstract photography, sometimes called non-objective, experimental, conceptual or concrete photography, is a means of depicting a visual image that does not have an immediate association with the object world and that has been created through the use of photographic equipment, processes or materials.

The choice of our Share Six theme this month was mine. Those of you who know my work  probably guessed as much! I am all about the abstract!

Changes in our life circumstances last year led my photography down a new and unexpected path. I had been using double exposures to capture more than a perfect representation of the scene, so I guess you could say there were indicators to the direction I was going. But I came to find myself learning about our new home and processing these changes for our family by experimenting more and more with in-camera creative techniques. As I reflect on it now, perhaps it has become more a means of escapism than acceptance. But that said, I definitely settled here faster than when we moved from the UK to Arizona, so it can’t have been such a bad thing. I feel like I understand the light and surroundings here, even though it is all more alien than I could have ever imagined, more intimately than anything before.

This month I could share any number of images from the last year with you; almost everything I create at the moment is abstract in some form or other. But photography is the one area of my life where I push myself without fear or hesitation, and I love having the excuse to try something new, so that is what I did. This was a little experimentation and some fun results:

I love that everyone will see something different in these images, and that is what I truly love about abstract imagery and the direction my art is taking. There is no right or wrong; mood, attitude and personal experience all feed into your interpretation. You don’t have to like anything that I show you, but if it can make you think, make you feel, make you question why, I call that a win.

Share Six Blog Circle – May 2018 | Urban

Another month has been and gone, and here in New England Spring has finally landed! What better excuse to get out and about in glorious weather than a street photography theme. This month at Share Six we want to see your best {Urban} images.

It’s been a busy month round here so I’ve not been able to shoot specifically for this theme. Looking through my archives, it turns out I don’t really do Urban anything! I’ve always told my husband that I want to live in the country, whereas he’d be totally happy in the city with all of its hustle and bustle, but my photographs tell me that I’m supposed to be surrounded by nature. And photography wins, so there you have it, rural-living wins!

Anyway, I digress. I do love street photography, I just don’t seem to do it a whole lot. So I’ve had to dig far far back to find a variety and images I’ve not shared before. Here a few of my favourites from the past few years and a couple from even further back. You may have seen some of couple of them before, and for that I make no apologies.

California > Phoenix > Venice > New York > London > Dallas

I took the image of the Houses of Parliament in 2014, but it’s taken me 4 years to process it. I had only just started shooting manual (literally two days before) and we went on a special evening trip into London so I could experiment with shutter speed. How I long to be there to apply all that I know now! Perhaps this summer I can make that happen?!

There are so many options with this theme: details, cityscapes, documentary and creative techniques. We want to see it all!

Share Six Blog Circle – April 2018 | Lines

I live in a place surrounded and engulfed by trees: long towering trees soaring up to the heavens; an unorganised chaos of vertical {lines}. This month at Share Six is all about Lines. Photographically we talk about leading lines all the time and that is no doubt one of my favourite compositional tools, but my abstract work has definitely grown the way it has because of the lumbering giants that live outside my window (each window). Whilst I’m looking forward to the onset of spring, I know that with it will come a darker house as the leaves take over our view of sky between the cracks in the lines.

The images I’m sharing for this month’s theme were all taken in March. We have had five (yes, five) winter storms in less than a month so my images reflect the monochromatic that comes with a snow-shrouded life:

Another month, another Share Six theme! This month we’re looking at {Contrast}.

I’ll admit this theme has had me drawing a blank for quite some time. I’ve come to the conclusion that that is because there are so many opportunities within the theme: high contrast, low contrast, contrast and comparison between multiple images, deep and rich black and whites, soft matte muted tones, the juxtaposition of subject through double exposures… I mean really, the possibilities are endless! Where do I begin?

Since we moved to MA last July it is safe to say that my style has evolved into two distinct parts. On the one hand I am still documenting our lives, I think in a more successful and yet less intrusive way, but on the other I have also allowed myself more creative freedom. I find myself increasingly drawn to tone and texture and away from the high contrast light that was such a dominating factor of our previous home in the desert. The monochromatic winter, the low-contrast soft light has enthralled me:

This next image was taken during the autumn when the leaves on the trees still dominated the view from our deck. It is a view that is so calming to me, but not because of the way that it looks. A single traditional exposure shows the number of trees, layer upon layer them, and as an image that is not calming. It is busy and unstructured. It does not capture the noise of the breeze through the trees, the smell of the pine sap or the sound of birds singing and chipmunks calling. It does not capture the easing of your breath as you relax into the surroundings.Massachusetts Photographer | © Ceri Herd Photography

Contrary to my previous statement about being drawn to low contrast light and away from deep shadows, as I took trail through woodland recently I was struck by the zebra-like stripes of shadow that lay in front of me. I wanted to capture that texture, the contrast of light and dark, in the direction that the light fell to exaggerate the rays. As photographers we often talk about how light “falls” so I wanted the viewer to see movement in that light.Massachusetts Photographer | © Ceri Herd Photography

My final image in this set was taken on the trail on the same day as the previous one no more than 5 minutes later. Technically and visually, quite the contrast but still very much me.  I have been experimenting with achieving patches of focus in-camera, and I’m enjoying the post-snow return of muted colour.Massachusetts Photographer | © Ceri Herd Photography

Share Six Blog Circle – February 2018 | Colour

Massachusetts Photographer | Share Six Colour Color | ©CeriHerdPhotography

It’s Share Six blog circle time again. These months seem to fly by with increasingly more speed!

This month we’re looking at {Colour} or {Color} (depending on your nationality and/or location). It’s such a great theme for this time of year, and I hope it helps you, as it does for me on this unusually grey day, to look beyond the winter skies, the snow and the ice. Whether you focus on a multitude of colour or a single colour pop, the possibilities are endless. I can’t wait to be cheered through the depths of winter by the colourful happiness that will flood the Share Six FB wall and IG feed!

My images this month were all taken in January: a trip to New York City, my favourite flowers, a sunrise and a sunset. That makes up a little bit of everything and they cover a little bit of everything colourful too: some abstract, some less so; some pop, some mishmash, some gentle softness of blush. What type of colour is your favourite?

The colour of Kate Spade’s window display immediately caught my attention, but the reflection of the New York skyline in the window against their gift wrap skyline, made me stop and look a while longer.Massachusetts Photographer | Share Six Colour Color | ©CeriHerdPhotography

Yet again, yes I know, there were more than six. What can I say? I’m an indecisive rule-breaker!
