Share Six Blog Circle – October 2021 | Documentary

Ceri-Herd-Photography-Waverley-Abbey-Farnham-01

This month we’re talking all about {documentary} photography. Over the past year or so, I steered away from documenting everything, much to the relief of the family. But documentary photography is my roots and I’ll never not take my camera on our mini adventures.

We recently renewed our English Heritage membership so I’m freshly invested in visiting all the local castles and ruins to make the most of it. One of those places is Waverley Abbey in Surrey (although this one is actually open access, haha. No membership discount required). The Abbey is only about 15 minutes from us and we’ve driven past so many times, but somehow we’d never been!

Here’s a few images from our hour at the Abbey in the Surrey countryside:

Welcome to another month of the 30 Minutes in the Life blog circle!

A few weeks ago we took a trip to Cardiff to watch London Welsh rugby club play Cardiff. We decided to make a weekend of it, by staying overnight and heading to Cardiff Castle the following morning.

Share Six Blog Circle – September 2021 | Quote

scarborough-beach-icm-by-ceri-herd-photography

“My life is shaped by the urgent need to wander and observe, and my camera is my passport.”

— Steve McCurry

Our blog circle for this month is inspired by this fabulous quote by American photographer, Steve McCurry. It’s particularly apt for me, at the end of a summer where our adventures have been largely steered and dictated by the places that I want to photograph.

Our summer started with a trip to North Yorkshire.

Day one my camera led us on a trip to RSPB Bempton Cliffs to see some local wildlife. I was hoping to see puffins – second on my photography bucket list (after orcas) – and we did, but only tiny little flying blobs from a distance; gannets, on the other hand, were right there centre stage!

Day two, we went to Whitby Abbey, the inspiration for Bram Stoker’s classic novel Dracula.

^^ This image was taken with the Lensbaby Edge 35. I love how the Edge optic allows me to focus on both the foreground and the abbey.

Day three, Rievaulx Abbey, as featured in Transformers: The Last Knight.

Followed by Helmsley Castle:

After all the historical sights, my camera needed some room to breathe and space for creativity. The beach and the sky was calling.

And finally, on our journey home, we took in all the perspectives of York Minster.

Thanks for joining us again this month. Don’t forget, post your {quote} images on our Facebook page SHARE SIX or to our Instagram gallery by using #sharesix_quote. A new theme will be posted on 6th October.

Share Six Blog Circle – June 2021 | Negative Space

Ceri-Herd-Photographer-negative-space-west-wittering

This month Share Six is focusing on one of my favourite compositional tools, {negative space}.

Negative space in art – photography or indeed any other art form – is often as important as positive space in terms of composition. Creatively, we can find a balance between positive space (the subject) and the negative space (the space surrounding the subject). Too much positive space and the image can feel cluttered, whereas negative space give the viewer space and time for their eyes to breathe. Pushing negative space to an extreme allows us to create a minimalist feel and draw attention to the subject in a more dramatic way.

Feeling reflective, I decided to start by looking back at my archives. Here are just a few of my recent (and not-so-recent) favourites where negative space has made for a more dramatic composition:

This final image was taken just a few days ago. It is half term in England – a week off school during the summer term – and we went camping in South Wales. This trip was booked over 18 months ago for last year but had been postponed due to the pandemic. This is the view of Three Cliffs Bay from our campsite on the Gower Peninsula. It was so worth the wait!

Thanks for joining us again this month. Don’t forget, post your {negative space} images on our Facebook page SHARE SIX or to our Instagram gallery by using #sharesix_negativespace. A new theme will be posted on 6th July.
