30 Minutes in the Life – April 2019 | Farnham Park

Our family has been back in the UK for five months and we are almost *finally* in our own home. Now we can feel settled. Now we can get used to our new normal.

One new normal that will definitely become a habit is this playground. We absolutely love visiting Farnham Park in Surrey. There is so much to capture the kids imagination, and so much space to run and explore, we’re lucky that it is only ten minutes from home (our new home, yee-haw)!

Share Six Blog Circle – April 2019 | Orange and Purple

Ceri-Herd-Photography-tulips-hampshire-double-exposure

This month the Share Six team is highlighting psoriatic arthritis, using the ribbon colours [orange and purple] as our theme for April.

Psoriatic arthritis awareness poster. Purple and orange ribbon made in 3D paper cut and craft style on white background.Psoriatic arthritis is a type of arthritis that develops in some people with the skin condition psoriasis. It typically causes affected joints to become inflamed (swollen), stiff and painful. Like psoriasis, psoriatic arthritis is a long-term condition that can get progressively worse. Psoriatic Arthritis causes intense fatigue, can affect the eyes and hearing. Common symptoms are nail dystrophy and mood swings. In addition PSA can also adversely affect the heart, cause obesity, swelling and metabolic syndrome, along with diabetes and inflammatory bowel disease.

The Psoriasis Arthritis Awareness Project have made two films that highlight incredible stories of perseverance and courage. You can watch them here. Read more about living with the condition here.

It seemed fitting to try to create images for this month that reflect the juxtaposition of delicacy and strength. I wanted to show layers of complexity with double exposures, and find a softness that represents fragility.

Share Six Blog Circle – March 2019 | Food

March is Nutrition Month so Share Six is celebrating all things {food}!

National Nutrition Month is an educational campaign focusing on the significance of physical fitness as well as eating nourishing meals. Taking charge of your health contributes to overall well-being; as well as losing weight or staying at your ideal weight, which reduces risks of chronic illness such as heart disease and diabetes.

The great thing about this theme is that you can interpret it in so many different ways: still life and layflat, lifestyle or documentary. Oh I would love to have an image of a farmer ploughing his fields at sunset…but I don’t, haha!

I have to admit I hoped we would be settled into our new house by now so I’d have a chance to experiment with layflat set ups for the very first time, but alas it was not to be. The time for that will come soon enough (fingers crossed *knocks on wood*) so instead I’m sharing some images from last year that haven’t previously seen the light of day (and one that has because I love it/him/the memories and the taste of the cider doughnuts that come with seeing it).

30 Minutes in the Life | February 2019 – In The Car

Ceri-Herd-Photography-ICM-Motion-01

“Thirty Minutes in the Life” features ladies from around the world as we capture 30 minutes in our lives as mothers, wives, daughters, sisters and friends {and photographers}.  This is a blog circle so please be sure to visit the next photographer in the circle.

This may not be a traditional 30 Minutes in the Life documentary; this is 30 minutes inside my process.

I often get asked about my thought process when I’m creating abstract images: do you set out with the intention to capture an abstract image? Do you have something particular in mind or a particular technique that you want to try? What is your motivation? The answer is: it varies. If I plan a trip to the beach or to see the sunset somewhere pretty, I have every intention of capturing it in a creative way, but other times, the compulsion comes completely out of the blue and at a time when I least expect it.

Last weekend we went London for the day. We went to the Natural History Museum, showed the boys where I use to work nearby, and then went over the road to the Albert Memorial and had ice cream by the Princess Diana Memorial Fountain in Hyde Park. I documented the day through photographs, as you would expect, and I planned to use one element of that adventure to share with you, and I probably will soon enough. However, on our way home, driving down the M3 with weary feet and through bleary eyes, I found the cloudy tones of grey and the whooshing of the traffic capturing my imagination and compelling me to pick up my camera. It was either that or a power nap! I hadn’t set out that morning with that intention; it was in that moment, feeling compelled to capture that feeling: how the motion of the motorway made me feel after a long and tiring day.

Of course, my thought process and motivation will be different on any given day. I photographed the same section of road just a few weeks ago – maybe it’s something about the boredom of the M3 – but on that day it was the speeding lights that made me pick up my camera (and it hadn’t even dawned on me that it was the same road until now).

Share Six Blog Circle – February 2019 | Paper Heart & Red

Ceri-Herd-Photography-Paper-Heart-Project-2

** February is Heart Month **

This month Share Six has joined forces with The Paper Heart Project to spread awareness for congenital heart defects, and we’re incorporating two themes for you to interpret as you wish: {red} and {heart}.

One out of a hundred children are born with a CHD. There are many different types of CHDs and children can suffer from one defect or multiple defects. The severity of the defect can range from mild, meaning a child will need no treatment, to terminal, the defects will ultimately take the child’s life. Congenital Heart Defects are severely under researched and underfunded. Therefore, the more awareness individuals can spread the more funding the heart community hopes to gain.
