30 Minutes in the Life – June 2019 | Brighton

Ceri-Herd-Photography-Seaside-Brighton-01

Welcome to another edition of 30 Minutes in the Life. This is a blog circle post so be sure to follow the link below to follow the circle all the way around.

Life has continued it’s roller coaster theme around here the past few months, but thankfully the stresses of relocation and buying a house are behind us, and the highs are finally and drastically outnumbering the lows.

One particular highlight this month was a day at the seaside with dear friends. It was a long-overdue reunion and despite their jet lag and a hen-do hangover on my part, it was truly a fabulous day. We spent our time together on the seafront in Brighton, we visited the Upside Down House, the doughnut on the pier and had fish n chips. There is nothing better than the British seaside.

These kids, who spent their first two years almost always together, and their smaller siblings, play together like the best of friends despite the time and distance that separates them. I hope that never changes.

Share Six Blog Circle – May 2018 | Urban

Another month has been and gone, and here in New England Spring has finally landed! What better excuse to get out and about in glorious weather than a street photography theme. This month at Share Six we want to see your best {Urban} images.

It’s been a busy month round here so I’ve not been able to shoot specifically for this theme. Looking through my archives, it turns out I don’t really do Urban anything! I’ve always told my husband that I want to live in the country, whereas he’d be totally happy in the city with all of its hustle and bustle, but my photographs tell me that I’m supposed to be surrounded by nature. And photography wins, so there you have it, rural-living wins!

Anyway, I digress. I do love street photography, I just don’t seem to do it a whole lot. So I’ve had to dig far far back to find a variety and images I’ve not shared before. Here a few of my favourites from the past few years and a couple from even further back. You may have seen some of couple of them before, and for that I make no apologies.

California > Phoenix > Venice > New York > London > Dallas

I took the image of the Houses of Parliament in 2014, but it’s taken me 4 years to process it. I had only just started shooting manual (literally two days before) and we went on a special evening trip into London so I could experiment with shutter speed. How I long to be there to apply all that I know now! Perhaps this summer I can make that happen?!

There are so many options with this theme: details, cityscapes, documentary and creative techniques. We want to see it all!

Thank you for joining us for another month at Share Six. Please continue around the circle by clicking HERE. I can’t wait to see how the exceptionally talented Nicola of Nicola MacQueen Photography interpreted this month’s theme.

Join us for this month’s theme by posting your {Urban} images on our Facebook page at SHARE SIX and to our Instagram gallery, by tagging #sharesix and #sharesix_urban. A new theme will be posted on 6th June.

For this month’s 10 on 10 I want to share a collection of images from our recent trip to New York City with you. I’ve shared many images from the trip on my blog and in on social media sites, but most of these will be new to you, I hope.

My youngest son turned 6 in January. He loves all things numbers, and over the last year or so that has translated into a love of big buildings: how tall they are, how many floors they have, when they were built… it’s an all-round fascination with numerical facts. He has a real love of learning and thirst for knowledge, these facts light him up! Back in October at his first parent-teacher conference his Kindergarten teacher asked if it was true that we would be taking him to the Empire State Building for his birthday. I had mentioned it to him once, a vague possibility when the thought popped into my head, but he’d clearly taken to heart and after telling all his friends there we simply had to go! (He has since told his class that we’re moving to Dubai… because of the Burj Khalifa, obviously… which FYI is NOT happening).

So off we went to (a desperately cold) NYC!

Restricting my share to 10 was SO hard this month but I think heart strings and artistic stings have found an adequate balance this time!

Share Six Blog Circle | May 2017 – Street

Street Photography | Share Six | Scottsdale Photographer | ©CeriHerdPhotography

This month’s Share Six theme is Street. Oooh, it’s a good one!

I have appreciated the art of Street Photography for as long as I have appreciated art itself. But since I have been able to call myself a photographer, Street Photography is not an art I have mastered. So I want to take this theme as a chance to encourage anyone reading this who is new to photography and/or new to street photography in particular to say this:

“Get Out and Explore”

You may think of Street Photography is an artsy black and white image of a busker on the subway or moving depiction of homeless man sleeping in a shop doorway. Yes, but Street Photography is that and more. Street Photography is capturing passing moments and freezing them in time. In the hustle and bustle of daily life, we all need to stop for a moment and look and you don’t need to be a photographer to do that!

Whatever and wherever your “street” is, you don’t have to label yourself as a “photographer” or an “artist”, you don’t have to shoot in manual or even own a fancy dSLR, to open your eyes to your surroundings and give street photography a try. The images I’m sharing with you today are from 2014. I had an entry level dSLR and I was only just learning how to use it properly. I was a tourist in Italy, documenting our trip. I was just starting out.

You too can capture images like this, simply by getting out of your house and allowing yourself time to explore. Whether it is somewhere you’ve never been or somewhere you go all the time, whether you’re taking a break and being a tourist, take these simple ideas to view it in a new way:

#1 Soak it in: how does the place make you feel? If you were a tourist, what would you see? What would stand out as different to anywhere else?

#2 Observe: watch the flow and movement of people, of traffic, of birds or flowers in the breeze. How do they enter your view, how do they move across the frame?

#3 Position yourself: think about angles and architectural leading lines, textures and framing, light and shade.

#4 Include people: don’t wait for a gap in the crowds. People give you a frame of reference. They give an image life and scale and perspective. They tell their own story.

#5 Details: if you struggle to narrow down you vision, focus on finding a particular colour or type of texture. A colour story is a wonderful way to get started and explore.

I hope these little tips help you in some small way!

Artists Inspired Blog Circle | December 2016 – White

Roosevelt Row Street Photography | Scottsdale Photographer ©CeriHerdPhotography2016

What does {White} mean to you? White in December…it has to be Winter! Snowmen and snowflakes. Thick crunchy frost underfoot glistening in the early morning sunshine. Cold. A deep down cold in your bones winter chill.

But I live in central Arizona. The valley of the sun. If we get frost here it’ll be melted by the time I get out of bed. If we get snow here it will be a light dusting on the surrounding mountains once a year and it’ll be a headline on the major news reports. But if we take the weather conditions out of the equation {white} says “outside”, so for this month’s blog circle I’m going to get out and about. White street photography is where I’ll be at.

I decided to take images specifically for this blog rather than revisit my archives. Truth be told I wanted an excuse to visit a part of downtown Phoenix that I’d heard was great for photographers: Roosevelt Row. Oh boy, I was not disappointed! There is so much colour, so much visual interest; there is art on  every single building, every street corner. I could go back time and time again and always find something new. Take a look at what I found…

Wouldn’t it make an awesome location for a photo session – families, kids, seniors, all of it! First person to book a session with me here gets their session fee waived!

This blog is part of the Artists Inspired Blog Circle series. Click here to continue the circle and see how talented photographer, Channon Williamson, interpreted this month’s theme. Be sure to follow the links all the way round to complete the full circle.
